This chapter is mostly about the idea of cause and effect and what is going on in the world around them. Because they represent both luck and unluck. In many ways the characters are lucky in this chapter, but in other ways, they are aren't. They're facing hard times. And the die represents how changeable things can be. But the fact that it is seven sided proves to be something unlucky because of the fact that it is seven sided, which no natural die should be. Seven, however, is a number of the Jews. I have no idea what school numbe means though.
ReplyDeleteThis chapter is primarily about the gambling of hiding a Jew, max, in their basement, a dangerous task really but could have a fruitful outcome. I believe that the images of the die allow the readers to understand the increasing danger, with each number, the longer they hide Max in the basement. The die overall could symbolize the risk of each roll, of being caught and the dangerous it could bring amoung St them so that they might lose everything.
ReplyDeleteThis chapter is primarily about Liesel and Max's growing relationship as they begin to read together and talk more. There are images of a die throughout the chapter to signal splits and diaspora. THe die might symbolize changes and disjunctiveness with the characters and their past selves. The different numbers also might represent diaspora and people's changing identities.
