Is Gender Real

In the very first unit, we discussed whether or not race is real. To that extent, now that we are currently studying patriarchy, feminism and gender relations, we can have similar discussions on this topic as well.

As a warm up, respond to the following question:

Is gender real? Explain your answer.

  1. No, gender is not real. I believe that every human is entitled to identify his/her/their self as any mix, absence, or individual gender, or as fits them on a daily basis, so genders assigned at birth could not possibly be real. Every person can choose when they feel they are ready to do so.

  2. No, gender is not real. Gender is a social construct created by society. What you identify and what pronouns you use as is determined by you, not by any biological means.

  3. Gender isn't real, gender is something made up by society based on stereotypes and assumptions.. Gender is not the same as sex. Sex is real because there is a definite difference in the reproduction organs between a boy and a girl.

  5. I believe that gender is not a real concept considering that the definition states, "the state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones)". Gender is a wide spectrum and depending on the person, there is no such thing as being male or female. Gender is fluid. Sex on the other hand is defined as, "either of the two main categories (male and female) into which humans and many other living things are divided on the basis of their reproductive functions". (Definition sources from google)

  6. I believe that gender is both real and not real. Gender, in terms of our genetics, does exist. X chromozone vs Y chromozone, do define us to a certain extent that we most likely don't wish for. But the idea of 'men' and 'women' don't completely exist. We assign arbitrary terms to genetic differences and then allow them to rule the way we think, dress, act, etc. When really, all they are is sligh differences in our genetic makeup and brain chemistry.
Sex is a real category. Just referring to our reproductive organs, it is a real term of classification. But when we expand it to our percived idea of gender. We begin to sign arbitrary terms to arbitrary things. I believe that gender is a sliding scale. Like being right. You can believe yourself to be more female or more male. But you aren't perhaps completely all of one at the end of the day.

  7. Gender is not real, it is a social construct. Gender is a apart of your identity that you can decide and identify for yourself if you so choose to. Some people take pride in their labels in their gender identity whole some people rather not label their gender and both opinions are completely valid. Gender is also a spectrum and there is not only two genders, however most believe that there only two genders male and female.

  8. Sex is real but gender is not. Gender is a social term created to separate a group form another there is no gender. You are whoever and whatever u want to be

  9. I believe that gender is one aspect that helps contribute to who you are as a whole. Along with Race, culture, age, etc. Gender is a fluid concept, that can not be assigned to someone. Gender is associated with the stereotypes, but they sould be open for each indidvidual's interpretation. One person's definition of a "boy" can be conpletely different than anothers

  10. I believe that gender is not a thing. Someone's sex does not mean that they must follow another set of social norms society has created for us. It is determined by the person and how they feel and who they chose to be.

  11. Gender is a real thing in which one might identify theirself but it does not identify thier sex. I am not sure thought because I believe one can choose how to identify one's gender if one believes in gender identity.

  12. In society gender should not be able to determine how individuals and large groups are treated. Stereotypes between men and women should not be the deciding factor on pay wage, on who should receive a job, on who should take care of their family, and how people look.

  13. It's true that men and women do have biological differences in hormones. However, gender is a spectrum. There are more than two binary genders. But sex is something else. For example, people who are born with intersex genitalia are not a specific gender; however, they can choose to identify with any gender, and that's okay. I don't really know a ton about this situation because I've never experienced it, so don't take what I say about this super seriously!! :)

  14. I believe that gender is not real, just like how race is not real. For example,
if women present themselves as masculine, they are considered powerful whereas if men show any sign of femininity, they are considered gay or inappropriate. Society has created a definition on what being a "man" and being a "woman" is, although it may not be what we really are.

  15. I don't know because I'm not really sure what exactly gender consists of and there are so many gray areas
