Yen Le Espiritu + Sharon Smith

After reading and discussing both texts, ultimately, what do the two readings by Yen Le Espiritu and Sharon Smith suggest about patriarchy -- particularly as it relates to certain women of color?

  1. Yen Le Espiritu and Sharon Smith both suggest that the patriarchy disregards, or holds in the lowest regard, minority women. Whether they are women of color, or women with a socioeconomic disadvantage, or both, this highlights the importance of and need for intersectional feminism.

  2. In the two readings by Yen Le Espiritu and Sharon Smith, both suggest that in patriarchy, women of color live racially structured lives. Both suggest that women of color both undergo the situation that they are both repressed for both being a women and being of color.

  3. Both readings suggest that patriarchy is a social construct created for the benefit of white men. When people of color enter the patriarchy, they dismantle it. Asian gender roles are reversed, in that women are the main breadwinners. In a white patriarchal setting, women of color are vilified.

  4. The readings by Yen Le Espiritu and Sharon Smith suggest that women of color experience patriarchy differently than now middle class white women experience patriarchy. Women of color deconstruct patriarchy because they have to work to provide and help their social and economic disadvantages.

  5. The flow of the patriarchy becomes undone when it comes to women of color. Because of the social construct African American women are in they apply to both discrimination and sexism, but cannot act against it because this world believes you can only be one or the other.

  6. Beyond Dualism and Black Feminism and Intersectionality both show how when women of color are discriminated against, it is sometimes unclear if the reason is because if their gender or race. This discrimination is patriarchal, because it is induced by primarily societal standards and influenced by the mostly white hierarchy while the rest of the races are found below them in terms of class. This patriarchy leaves women of color at a great disadvantage, because not only are they looked down upon in society already because they are women, but because they are also of different races such and being black or Asian, they are looked down upon even more because in the hierarchy, they are placed farther down in terms of classes; below their male counterparts

  7. Both "Black Feminism and Intersectionality" by Sharon Smith and "Beyond Dualism" by Yen Le EspĂritu both suggest that patriarchy over women of color can be a result of the fact that men have power over women and a person of color. In other words, women of color can be marginalized or be oppressed by someone with more agency, the male, due to the fact that they are a person of color, because they are female, or even both.

  8. As both readings suggest, both Sharon Smith and a Yen Le Espiritu convey how patriarchal societies put stereotypes amongst women of color classifying them as less than, giving them less advantages within their public sphere's society. These women are tainted with reputations of being to submissive or too dominant causing men to be too controlling or casting them off for not being a "stereotypical" woman.

  9. Both texts,"Beyond Dualism" and "Black Feminism and Intersectionality" express how women of color are discriminated but are not sure if this is because they are women of color or just women. This uncertainty confuses segregated beings because one is not sure if the color of their skin is the cause or what gender they may be.

  10. "Beyond Dualism" and "Black Feminism and Intersectionality" suggest that the patriarchy oppresses different women at different times and harshnesses. This difference highlights the importance of intersectional feminism because of the varying amounts of oppression that many women of different races, orientations, and abilities face.

  11. Patriarchy establishes a ranking between sexes and races, creating stereotypes and gender roles that both men and women are subjected to. Patriarchy already places (white) men at the top, getting the most advantages and privilege, and places women below them. Women of color are at an even larger disadvantage and seen as lower than say a white woman.

  12. Both readings suggest that the patriarchy to women of color, particularly the Asian race, deconstructs the European society's hierarchy because these women of color do not have the luxury of being protected, thus forcing them to become a dominant part in the family income and enter the public sphere. therefore, women of color disrupt the balance of power.

  13. In the articles, Espiritu and Sharon illustrate the confusion and oppression of minority women which stems from the fact that they complicate the traditional roles constructed by the patriarchy

  14. Espiritiu and Smith agree that the patriarchy needs to change it's outlook on minority women. The ideas or changes society makes don't really involve women of color. They highlight different ways the patriarchy displaces women of color in society.
